Ah, Magic Hat, my favoritest beer makers, I love you! I've been trying to test each Magic Hat brew to see if one may usurp my absolute fave, #9. Yes, I know I could do this a lot faster by visiting the brewery in Burlington, Vermont, but where's the fun in that? Will I get to squeal "Oh, Magic Hat" in bodegas around the city? No, didn't think so. On my birthday eve, I ran across their summer ale Hocus Pocus in the East Village on my way to the fireworks...
Hocus Pocus is a pale wheat ale, similar to their Circus Boy. Upon first taste, I found it light, and it tasted a bit like soap, Ivory Soap. I did taste the citrusy quality to it, but it was very subtle to me. This was the first time I noticed that Magic Hat puts expiration dates on their bottles; it made me wonder when the beer on the Lost Island expired.
It was refreshing and near perfect for a hot summer's day, but it lacked an overwhelming flavor; it was more like a melange of subtle flavors. If offered, I would accept, but #9 is still my fave!!
Magic Hat is widely available in the Tri-state and Northeast. If you find a wide selection, you are to immediately report back to me with said location. You can also visit them in Burlington, VT (though tours are currently postponed while the factory expands) and on the web: www.magichat.net.
