Yes everyone, there is a farm in New York City. This past weekend, Queens County Farm held its annual Apple Fest. After feasting on dim sum in the morning (more about that later!), I headed on over to the farm for some apples and a pumpkin or three.
Unfortunately we arrived too late to get apple pie, apple butter, apple cider, apple babies, or fried apple sundaes; we did get some crisp, fresh McIntoshes. We were also able to score bangers with caramelized onions off a food vendor, and it was pretty good. Not the best I've ever had, but it's the only time I've ever seen a vendor offering 'Irish Banger with Onions.'
There are other smaller farms/community gardens in New York. For a good list, click here.
If you want to get out of the city limits all together, but don't have a car, Gothamist recommends two to try. Personally, I'd go with Wickham's. If you do have your own transportation, check here and here for other farms in the tri-state.
