BREAKING: Brooklyn Institution Now in Queens!!!

Grimaldi's Douglaston
Having now been schooled in the lessons of thin crust pizza and DiFara's, I was thoroughly excited when I spied the above in my neighborhood. Grimaldi's? Here? in Queens? Yes, Grimaldi's has decided to grace us with their fourth Tri-State restaurant. Awesome.

Grimaldi's Douglaston Grand Opening
The restaurant itself sits a bit hidden from the LIE service road in Douglaston Plaza, underneath the Toys R' Us, aka walking distance from my house. The restaurant apparently opened about a month ago, but yesterday was their big grand opening so I stopped on by and got a pie. Inside is your stereotypical pizzeria look, checkerboad tablecloths and dark wood, but this one has a coal-fired oven, something that is very hard to find in this part of the woods due to NYC regulations. Since Mommsie and Big Bobo weren't able to come with me, I decided to order a sausage and mushroom to go so that they could enjoy some as well.

Mommsie's first experience with pizza upskirting

Oh and they were so glad I brought the pizza home. Big Bobo does NOT like mushrooms (oops, I forgot) and he devoured slices. Mommsie couldn't get enough either, she loves thin crust so this was right up her alley. The mushrooms were sauteed which is a huge plus for me as I hate when pizzerias use canned mushrooms, the sausage was flavorful with a little kick, the cheese was fresh, and the crust was thin, crispy, and smoky. Delicious. Now, I worry a bit about my neighborhood places like Centre, which does make a good pizza (their vegetable grandpa is out of this world), but I think there will be enough customers to patronize both. This Grimaldi's is true to the original in that they don't do slices, credit cards, or delivery. It's all pies, calzones, and salads, so when I need some garlic knots, I will have to go elsewhere.
