One Can Only Hope for Better Midtown Lunching Options in 2009

Boo, another Europa
Brownie and I both work in Midtown. Brownie and I often have discussions over where to eat in Midtown. Brownie and I are on Midtown Lunch a lot. Brownie and I avoid chain restaurants. Brownie and I had high hopes for the former Sugo! e Basilico place on 5th Avenue.

Those hopes were dashed Tuesday evening on my walk to Penn Station. I had seen work being done at the new spot, but no evidence as to what the final outcome would be. Alas, the new Europa signage means yet another boring salad/sandwich/soup place. Midtown is being slowly conquered by such places, the two biggest conquistadors being Europa and it's twin, Cosi. I resolve to boycott such establishments in the new year. That's right Cosi, you can keep my free sandwich or salad that on my Cosi card!! I will be taking my lunch dollars elsewhere.

I visited New York a few summers ago and I was surprised how ubiquitous the soup/sandwich/salad place was. It seemed that everywhere i looked there was a different version of the same thing. I did eat at Europa though, and it was ok.

I feel you pain. I work in Times Sq and the lunch options are atrocious! I was so excited to see a new place opening next to my building only to discover it's ANOTHER europa cafe. Right across the street from a PAX (which is yuk as I'm sure you know). There's already a Europa only a block away. So aggravating.

Yup. Sounds about right. And there's already one on 43rd and 7th. I work on 42nd btw 7th and 8th and that one is opening soon next to my office. Insane.

Yes, and don't forget the one on Broadway and 39th. I like to call these places "lunch factories" where everything tastes a bit waxy. Ugh.
