A couple of weeks ago we got the news that Streit's 84 year old factory downtown has been pulled off the market. I've eaten plenty of Steit's products over the years but I've never had the chance to visit their factory and small retail store on the Lower East Side. When I saw the sign in the window for 25 cent bags of potato chips and one dollar cans of macaroons, I couldn't resist popping in to check in to check the place out...
The store was sparsely stocked and in addition to the bargain basement potato chips and macaroons there were bags of noodles, plenty of boxes of matzo and soup mixes all very, very reasonably priced.
In the end it was the $1 bag of Whole Wheat Israeli Couscous that caught my eye. I love Israeli couscous. It's chewy, pasta-like, and, in my opinion, superior to any other couscous. I've never seen the whole wheat variety. Checking online Streit's Whole Wheat Israeli Couscous retails for around $3--66% off, pretty darn good deal. I'll definitely be back again.
