Travels with Brownie: McDonalds in Italia

Spinach and Parmesan Croquettes
I’ll freely admit that I’m not a McDonalds fan. I’m not a beef eater so the joy of a Big Mac is lost on me. Their French fries are probably my least favorite of all the fast food chains and their chicken tastes like preservatives. In fact in the close to a decade I’ve lived in the city I’ve only gone to a McDonalds exactly twice--once for our Lenten Fried Fish Battle Royale and once to get Blondie a Hello Kitty watch. Still one of my very good friends always makes time to stop at Mickey Ds abroad to check out their regional offerings and in her honor I hit up the McDonalds on Piazza Garibaldi in Naples with some interesting results…

Scanning through their menu they seemed to have more limited offerings than in the states. There were your standard burgers and some sort of chicken sandwich involving bacon. McFlurries with Cornetto candies mixed in and most intriguingly, waffle fries. Well, most intriguing until I saw the Crocchette con Spinaci e Parmigiano Reggiano.

Hold the phone. Spinach and cheese croquettes made with Parmigiano Reggiano cheese?! I’m totally in. An order came with 3 croquettes for 2.30€ and since I was their right when they opened at 10am, they were made right to order, so they were hot with a crispy breaded outside and an oozy Parmesan and spinach center. Yum. Now this is a McDonalds menu item I can get behind.
