I'll fully admit that I don't get over to Shopsin's as much as I'd like. When they were in the space on Carmine Street, Lawman and I would go for brunch most Sundays after Mass. Now that Shopsin's is in the Essex Market which isn't open Sundays, it's a bit harder for us to get into the city for brunch there. Consequently when we can find the time we like to head there for lunch, but even at lunchtime, I rarely deviate from the brunch side of the menu. If you've had any of Shopsin's pancake or egge creations, you'd understand. That said, the day after Thanksgiving when we should have been home stuffing ourselves with a second (third, ok maybe fourth) round of leftovers Lawman, Lil Bobo and I found ourselves hitting up Shopsin's for lunch. And this time I couldn't resist ordering the Calcutta sandwich, because when Kenny Shopsin makes a sandwich with lamb, grilled onions, mint bbq, feta and tahina you have to order it...
The lamb in this sandwich was super tender and flavorful and the ciabatta bread that held it all together was strong enough to soak up all of the glorious lamb/mint bbq/feta/tahina drippings. With just a little kick, this sandwich is definitely a meal worth repeating.
