Lunching at Shopsins: Oh, Calcutta!

Shopsin's Calcutta Sandwich

I'll fully admit that I don't get over to Shopsin's as much as I'd like. When they were in the space on Carmine Street, Lawman and I would go for brunch most Sundays after Mass. Now that Shopsin's is in the Essex Market which isn't open Sundays, it's a bit harder for us to get into the city for brunch there. Consequently when we can find the time we like to head there for lunch, but even at lunchtime, I rarely deviate from the brunch side of the menu. If you've had any of Shopsin's pancake or egge creations, you'd understand. That said, the day after Thanksgiving when we should have been home stuffing ourselves with a second (third, ok maybe fourth) round of leftovers Lawman, Lil Bobo and I found ourselves hitting up Shopsin's for lunch. And this time I couldn't resist ordering the Calcutta sandwich, because when Kenny Shopsin makes a sandwich with lamb, grilled onions, mint bbq, feta and tahina you have to order it...

The lamb in this sandwich was super tender and flavorful and the ciabatta bread that held it all together was strong enough to soak up all of the glorious lamb/mint bbq/feta/tahina drippings. With just a little kick, this sandwich is definitely a meal worth repeating.

I'm so jealous, I never been to Shopsin's! Is it really that good? what about the line? is it as bad as Clinton St. baking company?
hmmf.. I hate that they close pretty early and that they are not open at Sundays - where it's the only day of the week I get to stroll around the city and get me some stack of scrumptious pancakes -

Did you have to sneak that picture in or is it okay in Kenny's eyes?

I'm actually in the middle of composing a blog post about my recent trip to Shopsin's. Check it out, it should be up by sometime next week.

Mmmmmmm... I had a "Blisters on my Sisters," con chorizo. I think if Mr. Zappa were alive, he'd be "boys" with Kenny Shopsin... and order a "Blisters on my Sisters" ... and probably enjoy it

I like Shopsin's. I believe in Shopsin's.
