This past weekend, I was mourning the terrible state of my mint plant. Why? Because it's almost Derby season and that means warm weather and mint juleps. And Derby pie. But now I can comfort my sorrows of my 'not doing as well as I hoped' mint plant by stopping by Four & Twenty Blackbirds and eating their Derby pie. Mmmm, bourbon.
Four & Twenty's Derby pie is a chocolate pie with mint and bourbon mixed in, not the traditional chocolate and pecan pie found all around Kentucky the first week of May. There's the perfect balance of flavors; the chocolate and bourbon complement instead of overwhelming each other. Truth: most of the time I don't really like boozy desserts, the alcohol taste can easily get too overwhelming leaving me wishing I'd just had a regular drink with a regular dessert. But this slice of pie gets it right. Another Four & Twenty win.
