Travels with Blondie: Doughnuts Are Forever

Doughnuts are Forever
I headed down the coast to Northern Virginia this past weekend and while I ended up spending more time in the Shenandoah Valley than in DC, I did get to visit the newest addition to the Shake Shack empire!

The F Street location only opened a few weeks ago and was overrun with tourists when I arrived leading to a bit of line confusion. I was there for one thing only and was determined to get it in my hour to spare: the "Doughnuts are Forever" concrete. Vanilla frozen custard, pieces of a coconut doughnut from Astro Doughnuts, strawberry jam and rainbow sprinkles all mixed together into a little cup of heaven. It's a really fun concrete, not too chocolatey or overwhelming and eating spoonfuls of jam took me back to childhood when I would sneak such things out of the jar. Maybe next time I'll finally go to the Spy Museum next door.

Um, I have to point out that in this case, YOU'RE a tourist! Also, why visit a place you can go to any time, when there are so many unique places every city has to offer? I'm sure it was delicious, but it was a missed opportunity to try something new.

By tourists, I mean at least two high school groups all wearing matching T-shirts and a family that needed to study the menu at the counter holding up the C line. As for something new, this is. Every Shake Shack has unique concretes that can't be found at the others.

Also, it's right off the Metro Center station (where I had to transfer) and within walking distance of Union Station (where I needed to get to). When you're rolling around a suitcase on a rainy day, you're not as inclined to seek out an entirely new place.

I think it was your professional obligation to try this flavor and report back! Excellent work :). Let's petition the local shack to make a peter pan donut version......!!!
